A message from WereYouThere Founder Jonathan Hull, former TIME magazine bureau chief and bestselling author

Here's the idea that kept me up nights: why not create a site that brings people together based on shared experience, while gathering these experiences into a rich Social Archive where they can not only be shared and preserved, but passed on for the benefit of future generations?

The concept grew out of my own passion for storytelling both as a former TIME magazine bureau chief in Jerusalem and Chicago and a bestselling novelist. Over the years I've been surprised by the number of fascinating letters I've received from readers eager to share some of the unforgettable experiences from their own lives, hopeful that someone might listen. At heart, we are all storytellers, telling and retelling our stories to give structure and meaning to our lives.

WereYouThere is designed to give these stories an audience while connecting people at the point where their lives overlap, creating instant and authentic bonds between strangers.

There is something of interest for everybody, ranging from Pink Floyd to presidential politics. The OurKive is built by our members, so if you can't find what you're looking for, feel free to add a new topic yourself. You can also join a Community or start your own, while our privacy features put you in control. (To set your preferences, just go to your profile and click on "Manage my profile.") Take a look around. You're likely to find plenty of common ground with the people you meet.

WereYouThere was founded on the premise that experience is a gift that deserves to be shared. We encourage noncommercial use of the content by teachers, students and anyone interested in the road we've traveled. (Please see our Terms of Service for details.) We hope you'll support this important project and add a few of your own stories. Your feedback and suggestions are always welcome.

Enjoy your visit.
